The Wheels on the Bus
Paul O. Zelinsky turns the familiar song into a paper-engineered bus ride: wheels turn, doors move and riders bounce. The mechanisms connect repeated verbs to visible action.

Sing, then operate
Complete each verse before moving its mechanism so the action answers the words. Let children predict which part will turn, open, close or bounce from the verb.
Follow the riders
Track recurring passengers across the route rather than treating each spread as an isolated gadget. Their positions and reactions create a small visual story around the song.
Use gentle hands
Assign one operator at a time and show the direction each tab moves. If a mechanism resists, stop; forcing it can destroy both the action and the page.
Compare before choosing: Both invite coordinated movement, but Zelinsky embeds verbs in mechanical pages and a known song while Boynton supplies group dance calls for readers to perform. View the comparison title →
