Vintage children’s books
Find a favorite from the past to share with the next generation. Explore picture books, early readers and longer stories from each decade.
Start with the reading experience
The decade is useful for finding a remembered title, but it does not tell you whether a book suits tonight. Open a decade and choose among books for joining in, early readers with short stopping points, visual puzzles, and longer fiction with more demanding themes.
Check the edition as well as the title
Flaps, letters, sound modules, movable pieces and activity materials can be missing or worn in older copies. Individual profiles identify the feature to inspect when it changes the reading experience, and distinguish the original work’s date from the edition shown.

Children’s books from the 1970s
The 1970s shelf moves from participatory picture books and compact early-reader stories to family comedy and animal fantasy. Use the reading-stage groups to separate books built for noises, repetition and shared pictures from books that ask a child to follow a chapter-length plot.

Children’s books from the 1980s
The 1980s selection includes highly interactive board books, visual puzzle books, short family stories and novels that deal directly with war, prejudice, grief and responsibility. The same decade label therefore covers very different reading sessions; choose by format and emotional demand first.

Children’s books from the 1990s
The 1990s shelf ranges from movement-heavy board books and photographic searches to middle-grade fantasy, historical fiction and horror. It is most useful as three different shelves: join-in books, books for looking and talking, and novels whose danger or history needs an older reader.
