Our review
After a predator eats his red-fish school, black Swimmy explores the sea and later teaches a new group to swim together in the shape of one enormous fish, with himself as the eye. Beauty, grief, and strategy all precede the collective defense.
Let the loss register before celebrating teamwork, and discuss why Swimmy’s difference becomes useful without making him solely responsible. Water Protectors also organizes a community against danger, but through stewardship and advocacy; Swimmy offers a compact visual fable about coordination against a predator.
Before you buy it
A tuna eats Swimmy’s entire first school, and the later solution is a fable rather than accurate fish behavior.
