Our review

The snail's chosen trip moves through ice, fire, caves and waves before the whale is stranded in a bay. The size contrast becomes functional at that point: the snail can reach a school and leave a written message, turning observation and communication into the rescue mechanism.

Stick Man also crosses many settings, but he is repeatedly carried away and wants only to return home. Snail is the better fit for voluntary exploration followed by a problem-solving rescue; Stick Man is about preserving identity through involuntary displacement. This story's descriptive journey is longer and less refrain-led than The Gruffalo.

Before you buy it

The journey covers multiple settings before the beaching and rescue, so it is less refrain-driven than The Gruffalo. Stick Man also travels far from home, but his movement is forced and episodic rather than a chosen expedition.
