Our review

Ricky is a small mouse being bullied at school when he rescues a powerful robot from its evil creator. The rescue reverses the expected power relationship: Ricky helps the robot first, then gains a friend and protector who helps him face Dr. Stinky and save the city.

That combination gives the fantasy more substance than simply wishing for a strong companion. It is especially useful for readers drawn to robots and heroes who also want a direct story about loneliness, agency, and friendship. Hilo also begins with a mysterious powerful newcomer, but Ricky earns a robot’s friendship before receiving protection; Hilo makes identity itself the larger mystery.

Before you buy it

Bullying and an evil inventor drive the conflict, although the saved description frames the danger as comic hero adventure.
