Dragon wakes up groggy and proceeds to do things wrong throughout the day. Rather than building around a villain or quest, the story uses an accumulating bad day as its central problem, making the emotional situation recognizable even within a dragon story.
This is best suited to a child who enjoys mistakes played for humor and can take comfort in seeing a whole difficult day contained within one story. Its appeal is gentler and more everyday than the action-heavy books nearby. Poppleton divides everyday friendship into three small successes; Dragon Gets By keeps one character inside a single accumulating bad day.
