Our review

George and Harold hypnotize their principal into believing he is their homemade superhero, Captain Underpants, then have to manage the disaster when he charges into a real confrontation with Dr. Diaper and robot henchmen. Comics, short prose blocks, fake documents, and Flip-O-Rama make constant format changes part of the joke.

It can hook a reader who avoids dense prose but is willing to track satire, school conflict, and a deliberately ridiculous premise. Pranks, insults, cartoon peril, and underwear humor are central rather than incidental. Dog Man begins with the same boys’ comic-making but follows a dog-headed police hero; Captain Underpants keeps the frame closer to school authority and the creators’ own consequences.

Before you buy it

The book relies heavily on pranks, mockery of adults, underwear jokes, and cartoon violence, which may not fit every reader or setting.
