I Spy: A Book of Picture Riddles
Jean Marzollo’s rhyming clues direct the eye through Walter Wick’s densely arranged photographs. The first book rewards exact looking, vocabulary and collaborative strategies more than fast answers.

Parse the clue before searching
Read the whole rhyme, name each target and clarify unfamiliar words before scanning. This turns a hunt into a language task and reduces random pointing.
Search by zones
Divide a spread into corners, rows or color groups and say where you looked. When an object is found, describe its position relative to nearby items rather than only touching it.
Use disagreement productively
Some photographed objects resemble more than one clue. Ask each reader to justify a candidate with shape, color or count; the image supplies evidence even when the first guess is wrong.
Compare before choosing: The shared riddle format makes the holiday sequel an easy comparison, while its seasonal objects and miniature displays create a narrower visual vocabulary. View the comparison title →
