Flotsam

A beach camera reveals impossible underwater scenes and a photograph of children holding earlier photographs, prompting the boy to add himself and return the camera to the sea. Magnification makes a hidden chain of custodians visible.
Flotsam by David Wiesner is wordless, so its read-together time varies with how long you spend narrating and looking at each picture. It suits ages 4-8.

Our review
The found camera first promises a simple mystery, but developed film shows mechanical fish, reading octopuses and other impossible underwater life. A microscope then reveals that one photographed child holds a picture of another, continuing through many owners. The boy understands the chain, photographs himself holding it and sends the camera back for someone else.
Journey gives its heroine a red tool that solves immediate obstacles and leads through capture to friendship. Flotsam is slower and investigative, asking the reader to infer scale, chronology and stewardship from images. The nested portrait is the structural key; without time to examine it closely, the book can feel like unrelated fantastic scenes.
Before you buy it
The nested photograph and microscope sequence demand sustained visual attention. Younger readers may enjoy the sea inventions without understanding the camera’s repeated journey through time.
