Journey

A lonely girl’s red marker opens a door and creates transport through a wordless fantasy; her decision to free a captured bird costs her the marker and leads to rescue and friendship. The recurring color carries causality.
Journey by Aaron Becker is wordless, so its read-together time varies with how long you spend narrating and looking at each picture. It suits ages 3-8.

Our review
A red line begins as a door and then becomes a boat, balloon and flying carpet as the girl moves deeper into an unfamiliar city. When she uses the marker to free a purple bird, guards capture her and take the tool; the bird’s return and a matching purple marker connect courage to the final friendship. Color functions as both object and narrative thread.
Flotsam also asks readers to construct a wordless adventure, but its camera reveals nested histories inside photographs rather than allowing a character to draw solutions. Journey offers clearer forward action and fantasy peril. Its lack of words creates interpretive freedom, while also requiring enough time and proximity to trace small visual causes.
Before you buy it
The wordless plot includes capture, guards and peril, and several transitions require careful visual inference. A reader wanting independent decoding practice will find no printed text.
