Our review

Yoko’s classmates mock the sushi and red bean dessert in her lunch. Mrs. Jenkins creates an international food day, but the meaningful change is small: Timothy tries Yoko’s food and shares it with her when the group still hesitates.

Avoid making Yoko explain or perform her culture for others; focus on the classmates’ behavior and Timothy’s respectful curiosity. Bilal Cooks Daal builds suspense before friends taste a family dish at home. Yoko is the sharper classroom story about food shaming and one peer choosing differently.

Before you buy it

The food mockery is sustained and may resonate painfully; an international-food event alone is not a complete response to bullying.
