School's First Day of School

Frederick Douglass Elementary begins uncertain about the children, reacts to noise and mess, and gradually discovers what a school can do with them. Giving the building the anxious viewpoint lets the child observe first-day worry from a safer distance.

Our review
The building is new to its job and asks the janitor what the children will do to it. Once the day begins, noise, spills and mixed reactions complicate its expectations before classroom activity gives the place a sense of purpose. A nervous child can therefore evaluate someone else's first day instead of being questioned about their own.
Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes moves through library, lunchroom and playground with a stabilizing refrain. School's First Day offers a more unusual emotional perspective but less practical orientation. Choose it to discuss mutual uncertainty; choose Pete when naming the day's physical settings will be more reassuring.
