Our review

The little engine's effort begins because a train carrying toys and food needs help. Other engines refuse before the blue engine tries, so the contrast is between willingness to help and apparent strength. The familiar encouragement belongs to a particular obstacle, not an abstract promise that trying always guarantees success.

Keep the stranded train's need visible when reading the repeated climb; it explains why reaching the far side matters. Freight Train follows a colorful train through changing surroundings with much less language and no rescue problem. Choose it for a short visual reading, and The Little Engine That Could when the child wants a sustained challenge with a beginning, setbacks and an outcome. Compare editions if matching a remembered childhood copy is part of the appeal.

Before you buy it

The refusals and repeated climb make this a more sustained story than Freight Train. Editions and illustrations vary, so choose the version you want to share rather than relying on the title alone.
