Rosie's Walk

Rosie calmly crosses the farm while an unseen fox suffers one accident after another behind her. Minimal text names the route; the pictures supply pursuit, cause and comic timing.
Rosie's Walk by Pat Hutchins is estimated to take about 2.5 minutes to read aloud (32 words, 1 sentence a spread). Best for ages 2-5.

Our review
Rosie’s sentence-length walk names spatial actions across, around, over and under the farm. At the same time, the pictures show a fox following her and triggering a rake, pond, haystack and other disasters. Because Rosie never reacts, the reader holds the information she lacks and can predict danger from the environment.
Good Night, Gorilla also lets pictures reveal an animal’s actions beyond an adult’s awareness, but its sequence gathers zoo animals into a bedroom. Rosie’s Walk is more exact for prepositions and cause-and-effect slapstick. The fox plot disappears in an audio-only reading, so this needs shared access to the illustrations rather than narration from across a room.
Before you buy it
A listener who cannot see the pictures closely receives almost none of the plot. The fox’s repeated injuries are slapstick, and the book does not ask Rosie to recognize the danger.
