Our review

Handa selects seven fruits for Akeyo and wonders which her friend will prefer. While the words remain with that question, the pictures show a sequence of animals taking one fruit each; a goat then dislodges tangerines into the basket. Akeyo’s surprise is therefore different from the one the reader has been tracking, and naming fruit, animal and order supports a full retelling.

The Doorbell Rang also redistributes food through a repeated sequence, but its children know that every new guest changes the cookie shares. Handa’s Surprise is the better choice for dramatic irony and visual evidence. Walker identifies Handa as Luo in southwest Kenya; that specific setting should not be flattened into generic “African” scenery.

Before you buy it

The dramatic irony depends on seeing the illustrations clearly. Use the publisher’s Luo and southwest Kenya context, but avoid turning one village journey into a general lesson about African life.
