Our review

Pete appears within the traditional five-pumpkin rhyme as the pumpkins count down from their gate and react to witches, wind, and Halloween night. A known song supplies the structure, so children can participate before they can decode the text.

Use fingers to track the remaining pumpkins and distinguish singing from independent reading. Ten Orange Pumpkins also counts backward but gives each disappearance a new visual agent; Pete is the shorter musical adaptation for a child already attached to the character.

Before you buy it

It is an adaptation rather than a developed Pete story, and memorized singing does not demonstrate print decoding.
