Frog and Toad Are Friends

Each chapter isolates one social or practical problem: waking a friend, losing a button, telling a story, swimming self-consciously and waiting for a letter. 'The Letter' earns its ending through delay—the snail is slow, but Frog's decision means Toad no longer has to believe nobody writes to him.

Henry and Mudge begins with loneliness and builds security through a child's bond with a large dog. Frog and Toad are verbal equals whose misunderstandings and accommodations can be read in either character's voice. One chapter at a time preserves the book's bridge function better than treating all five as a single bedtime story.
