Rowley Jefferson begins his own journal and decides to use it to write a biography of Greg Heffley. Greg already imagines himself becoming rich and famous, so Rowley’s project gives their friendship a purpose while exposing a mismatch between Greg’s self-image and Rowley’s intentions.
The change in narrator is the real reason to choose this over another standard Wimpy Kid installment. Familiar characters are filtered through Rowley’s decisions, making perspective and authorship part of the comedy. Diary of a Wimpy Kid introduces the school hierarchy through Greg; Awesome Friendly Kid is for readers ready to question that account through Rowley.
Before you buy it
The premise gains meaning from knowing Greg and Rowley’s established relationship, so it is less natural as a first series entry.
