Black on White

Single high-contrast silhouettes remove visual clutter and leave room for naming, tracing, and sustained looking at form.
Black on White by Tana Hoban is wordless, so its read-together time varies with how long you spend narrating and looking at each picture. It suits ages 0-2.

Our review
Hoban places one bold black silhouette on each white field: familiar forms such as a flower, banana, and butterfly can be examined without background clutter. With no text and no required order, the adult can name, trace, rotate, or simply hold a page still for looking.
It is especially useful during the stage when simple contrast is easier to attend to than a detailed scene. Older babies may quickly want more action or color. Look, Look! also uses stark contrast but adds red words and scenes of children; Black on White is the purer object-and-shape study.
