Our review

The refrain establishes that each obstacle cannot be avoided, then the sound words invite the reader to embody how it is crossed. When the bear appears, the route is replayed in reverse without explanation, rewarding anyone who remembers the order and accelerating naturally toward home.

The Gruffalo also repeats a forest route, but its mouse changes danger through invented speech and later reuses earlier encounters as a bluff. Bear Hunt depends on physical participation, sequence recall and a chase. The bear's final isolation complicates the triumph and is worth noticing after the excitement subsides.

Before you buy it

The encounter and chase can frighten sensitive listeners, and the energetic return is poorly suited to a final calming read. The Gruffalo uses repeated landscape encounters with verbal problem solving rather than physical escape.
