Sort the vehicles by work
The publisher highlights dump, fire, tanker and ice-cream trucks among more than fifty types. Group them by carrying, lifting, building, selling or responding to emergencies so the labels become a system rather than a list.
Follow one mechanical feature
Look for tanks, ladders, open beds, enclosed cargo areas and specialized wheels. Ask how one visible feature helps that truck do its job, and allow 'I don't know' when the illustration does not establish the answer.
Period details need present-day comparison
The book was published in 1978, so designs, safety equipment and terminology may differ from vehicles a child sees now. Treat those differences as a reason to observe a current truck, not as an error to erase.
Compare before choosing: The Truck Book is the better reference-like browse for real categories; Scarry adds a family journey, comic incidents, imaginary vehicles and a Goldbug search. View the comparison title →
