Stuck

Book cover for Stuck by Oliver Jeffers

Floyd throws progressively less plausible objects at a kite in a tree until shoes, animals, a whale and even firefighters are caught. The comedy depends on remembering the growing inventory and noticing that escalation never improves the method.

Our review

Floyd’s kite begins a chain of attempted rescues in which every new object is larger and less sensible than the last. Shoes, animals, a whale and firefighters accumulate in the tree while the original goal is almost forgotten. A reader can pause before each throw to ask whether it changes the method or only raises the stakes.

Triangle also follows a character whose plan rebounds, but its tension comes from spatial geometry and uncertain intention. Choose Stuck for inventory, scale and comic escalation. Its practical limit is equally specific: Floyd’s persistence is not productive problem solving, and the fire brigade becoming trapped makes the episode fantasy rather than safety guidance.

Before you buy it

Floyd does not learn a careful problem-solving process, and the rescue workers also become part of the joke. Treat the book as absurd escalation rather than a model for getting objects down safely.
