Our review

Li’l Petey, Molly, and Flippy teach twenty-one baby frogs to make comics, and the students respond with stories in deliberately different forms, including collage, photography, drawing, and verse. The classroom frame allows creative disagreements and hurt feelings to sit beside the work itself, showing revision and expression as social processes.

Choose it for a child who likes making as much as consuming comics; pause after a student piece and try its method. The large cast and nested comics can feel scattered to readers wanting one continuous quest. A Tale of Two Kitties develops Li’l Petey inside an action plot; Cat Kid Comic Club foregrounds artistic process and many young voices.

Before you buy it

Its twenty-one students and stories-within-the-story create a fragmented structure that some readers will find harder to track.
