Are You My Mother?

A newly hatched bird leaves the nest and repeats one question to animals, machines and an increasingly alarming excavator before returning to his mother. The fixed question lets a beginning reader participate while the possible answers become less plausible.

Our review
The baby bird cannot identify his mother because he has never seen her, so each repeated question has a clear reason. Cow, dog, plane and boat allow the listener to reject candidates from visual evidence; the Snort then reverses the pattern by carrying him back to the nest despite appearing most dangerous.
Go, Dog. Go! uses controlled language for colors, positions and opposites across independent scenes. Are You My Mother? is the better bridge to narrative reading because the question, risk and reunion form one complete line. Sensitive children may need reassurance during the machinery sequence.
Before you buy it
The baby is lost and alone for most of the book, and the Snort machine creates real peril before the reunion. Go, Dog. Go! is more episodic and less emotionally tense, with concept practice rather than a search.
